Diving Great Barrier Island

12 Divers meet at Leigh this morning to board the charter boat Apollo and head out to Great Barrier Island for a couple of dives. With calm seas and 6 knot tail wind it was a very pleasant cruise around Little Barrier and we encountered a pod of dolphins as approached Wellington Heads for our first dive.

On entering the water we encountered a large stingray as we dropped on to a labyrinth of large bolders nestled in to the kelp. As we weaved our way between the rocks and swim throughs we spotted a large octopus and numerous crayfish.

We surfaced for 2 hours break between dives and enjoyed Brians freshly cooked sausages and onions in bread, before taking a second dive a short distance along the western side of Great Barrier Island.
